Fraxel vs. Morpheus8: Which Should You Do First?
Both treatments stimulate collagen, but they work through completely different mechanisms. Choosing the wrong one first can waste thousands and delay your results.
The Fundamental Difference
Fraxel is a laser. It uses 1550nm and 1927nm wavelengths to create microscopic thermal zones in the epidermis and superficial dermis. The body responds by replacing damaged tissue with new collagen and elastin. It is primarily a resurfacing and textural treatment.
Morpheus8 is radiofrequency microneedling. It delivers RF energy through insulated needles directly into the dermis and subdermal fat. The heat causes immediate collagen contraction and long-term remodelling. It is primarily a lifting, tightening, and volumetric treatment.
They are not competitors. They are complementary tools for different concerns.
When to Choose Fraxel First
Choose Fraxel as your first treatment if your primary concerns are:
• Surface texture irregularity (enlarged pores, roughness)
• Fine lines and superficial wrinkles
• Sun damage and dyschromia (uneven colour)
• Superficial acne scarring (box scars, rolling scars)
• Actinic keratosis and pre-cancerous lesions
Fraxel works from the surface inward. It improves what you see in the mirror first. The downtime is 3–5 days of redness and bronzing. Results build over 3–5 sessions.
When to Choose Morpheus8 First
Choose Morpheus8 as your first treatment if your primary concerns are:
• Skin laxity (jowls, neck laxity, drooping eyelids)
• Volumetric loss (hollowing cheeks, temple concavity)
• Deep wrinkles and folds (nasolabial, marionette)
• Submental fat and jawline definition
• Deep acne scarring requiring subcision-level remodelling
Morpheus8 works from the deep dermis upward. It addresses structural changes that Fraxel cannot reach. The downtime is 2–3 days of swelling and mild bruising. Results build over 2–3 sessions.
The Optimal Sequence
For patients with both surface and structural concerns, the optimal sequence is:
1. Morpheus8 first (structural foundation)
2. Wait 3 months for full collagen remodelling
3. Fraxel second (surface refinement)
This sequence prevents the Fraxel from disrupting the Morpheus8 healing cascade and allows each treatment to work at its optimal depth.
Total investment for the combined protocol: $4,500–$6,000. Timeline: 6–8 months. The result is genuinely transformative — addressing concerns at every skin layer simultaneously.
