From Box Scars to Smooth Skin: My 12-Week Microneedling Experience

After years of cystic acne left deep box scars on my cheeks, I believed surgery was my only option. A dermal therapist in South Yarra suggested a different path.

The Scars That Would Not Fade

I am 28. My active acne cleared at 24, but the aftermath was devastating — deep box scars on both cheeks, rolling scars on my temples, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation that made my skin look permanently bruised. I had tried at-home derma rollers, chemical peels at beauty salons, and every "scar serum" on the market. Nothing worked because nothing reached deep enough.

The Treatment Plan

My dermal therapist recommended a combination approach: medical-grade microneedling (2.5mm depth) combined with topical growth factors, performed every 4 weeks for 3 sessions, followed by maintenance every 3 months. The first session was surprisingly tolerable. A thick numbing cream was applied for 40 minutes. The needling sensation was like light scratching. My face was red and slightly swollen for 48 hours. By day four, I could return to work without anyone noticing. The most dramatic change came between sessions two and three. The box scars that had seemed permanent began to soften at the edges. The rolling scars on my temples flattened noticeably.

12 Weeks Later

At my 12-week review, the before-and-after photographs were genuinely emotional. My scar depth had reduced by approximately 40%. The hyperpigmentation had faded by 70%. Most importantly, the texture was smooth enough that a light tinted moisturiser provided full coverage — something that was impossible before. I will continue maintenance sessions every 3 months. The investment was $1,800 for the initial course. For the psychological relief of not dreading photographs, it was worth every dollar.
